Welcome to the Midwest Transport web site! We go by the name of MTI and for the remainder of the info will refer to the company as MTI.
The predecessor of MTI was formed in 1980 and MTI purchased the assets of that company in 2003. MTI primary business is hauling mail for the United States Postal Department. We are primarily a “highway” contractor in that our contracts tend to be of longer miles as opposed to local delivery. Our business involves 38 states but the majority of the miles are east of the Mississippi river. In 2010 we drove approximately 54 million miles. We have 500 power units and approximately 700 employees.
General freight as well as specialized freight is becoming more of a factor in our business. We currently have operations located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Greencastle, Indiana, and Greenup, Illinois. We haul everything from marine engines to auto parts.
The last portion of our portfolio is the combination of mail and freight. The USPS is changing and is offering one way routes versus the past operations of round trips with the mail. These type of routes haul mail one direction and freight the other. This operation is relative new and is challenging in that the scheduling is difficult to maintain to meet the mail schedules.
MTI operates with company drivers utilizing International tractors, Goodyear tires and Chevron oil. We operate our own maintenance facilities where we repair both tractors and trailers.
While our goal is to increase volume and profitability we are faced with a changing postal service that is attempting to decrease costs. That places additional pressure on our operation to find ways to reduce costs while maintaining service levels and maintaining a quality workforce. MTI is fortunate to have an outstanding group of employees that have been of great value in these cost cutting measures. We are confident that even with the current inflation cost pressures we can maintain our current quality. We are adapting to change!
